A few weeks ago, in 6th grade LA we started working on the backpack project. This project was based off the book we read this summer called “Finding someplace” by Denise Lewis Patrick.

In the book the main character Reesie is about to have her birthday when hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans and flooded in this catástrofe she was forced to take shelter at her elderly neighbor’s house. Miss Martine, her neighbor, stayed with her along with her friend Orlando’s older brother Dre and his wife Eritrea. To get her they work together to stay safe during the storm and help Miss Martine stay calm. After the storm Reesie’s mom takes her away from New Orleans, fearing another storm. They moved to New Jersey and she had to convince her mom to move back to New Orleans with the rest of her family. Eventually her mom caves and they move back. In this story she was forced to make a big decision, what to bring in her backpack. And so we did the backpack project, where we thought about what items we would bring if we had to evacuate our homes. We drew out items on our paper “backpacks” and colored them in.

This was a good assignment because it made us think about what really mattered to us. When we finished the book we thought about who we thought was the hero of the story was. We wrote an essay about who we thought the hero was.

It says:
“I think that Mr. Lloyd Boone is the hero of this story because firstly he was a Police Officer so he saved countless lives. Secoundly he convinced Reesie’s mom, Mrs. Jeany Boone, to move back to New Orleans after the storm. Thirdly he was a hero because he stayed in New Orleans to save people even when he could’ve left. That makes him a hero not just to Reesie but to the people of New Orleans too. Fourthly he tried to keep connections with Reesie when she moved to New Jersey by giving her presents and coming to visit for Christmas. Lastly he always seemed proud as a father and supported what his kids wanted to do. Like how he didn’t hold Reesie back from being a designer even if he might’ve thought that some other jobs would be better. All of this shows how he is not just a hero to the story but a hero to his whole community.”
I loved the creativity in this project. It made me think about sentimental items verses other items and it made me think about what really matters to me.
