A few weeks ago the 6th grade of Durham Academy when on a trip to Camp Kirkwood in Watha, North Carolina for a group bonding experience. While we were there, we did so many fun activities like kayaking, zip lining, watching movies, playing in the pool, jumping on the konga, forest ecology, V swing, and doing group bonding activities.

This is a photo of some of the kids in our grade on the konga jump. The konga jump is a big inflatable bubble that you get to jump on like a trampoline! This photo shows just how high we could jump on it. We played games like tag, colors, and duck duck goose. We also did more education games in forest ecology where we learned about trees and what comes from them.

While we were there a tropical storm hit the area making the lake flood over and we stayed inside when the weather was bad. But that didn’t stop us from having fun! We played card games inside or watched movies while the rain poured. We played our normal games just under shelters when it was raining too.

This is a picture of the 6th grade watching the Lorax. We got snow cones for desert with it.
Because it rained so much while we were there the lake started to flood over, almost reaching the cabins. But that didn’t stop us from doing all the water activities like canoeing or swimming in the pool!

We also did fun land activities like V swing and group bonding. Both of these activities taught us to work together. Like how in group bonding we used two fingers and slowly lowered a hoola hoop to the ground or when we played 1 fish, 2 fish, red fish, blue fish we had to shield the ball from the counselor who was watching out for it. Also in V swing we worked together to pull the swinger up into the air.

We also went on a zip line while we were there. We soared across the lake and onto the other side where we landed (or attempted to) on our feet and walked back to the other side. Zip lining was personally my favorite part because you could soar over the water and wave to people kayaking while you flew trough the air leaving everybody else behind.

Then after a long day we would head back to our cabins. We were sorted into 8 cabins, 4 were girls and 4 were boys. Our cabins were sorted by advisory so the kids in the same advisory would be together with another advisory.

When we were there we got to play basketball under the shelter and gaga ball in the pits. We also made a new friend while we were there. Bubbles the 1 year old pot-bellied pig played with her soccer ball for us and we got to pet her.
Why don’t people like to play basketball with pigs? Because they hog the ball.

On the final night before we had to leave, we roasted s’mores with a beautiful moonlit view back at our cabins from the bonfire.
After two amazing days, we eventually had to go home. This trip helped us to learn more about our classmates and ourselves through physical and mental challenges. I loved being there with my friends and hope to do more things like that soon. So as you you pack up your bags to leave your next destination think about how it changed you.
